A first half strike from Kyreece Lisbie ensured Brentford B progressed to the Second Round of the London Senior Cup as they beat Corinthian-Casuals on Tuesday night.
After coming out winners in the London Senior Cup last season, Brentford B Manager Neil MacFarlane and his side will be looking to replicate that same triumph in the 2022/23 campaign. The Bees' first challenge in the competition saw them come up against Corinthian-Casuals at Woking Football Club’s, Laithwaite Community Stadium.
Brentford got off to a great start and came agonisingly close to opening the scoring in the first five minutes when midfielder Ryan Trevitt played through number nine, Lisbie. The striker took the ball round Eddie Allen in the opposing team’s goal but missed contact with the ball when he swung his foot towards the Corinthian net, missing out on a great chance to put the Bees in the lead.
Right-winger Isaac Holland seemed to be the main cause of the Corinthian back line’s discomfort in the opening fazes of the game, finding plenty of space in the wide area with the final ball not quite coming off for the side as they dominated possession.
On 18 minutes Corinthians, who play in the Isthmian League Premier Division, had their first opportunity of the game.
Trey Masikini crossed in a dangerous ball from the left flank which fell to Benjamin Checklett, but the target man’s effort was straight at Roco Rees making it an easy save for the Brentford’s keeper.
Just a few moments later the Bees were inches away from breaking the deadlock when centre back, Edon Pruti, found himself with time to shoot from 20 yards out but saw his right footed effort smash against the post.
Brentford got their deserved goal on 38 minutes. Holland's cross into the box found Lisbie, who skipped round Corinthian defender Ryan Green, and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from six yards out getting his second goal of the season.
Brentford began the second half similar to how they started the first, showing great amounts of composure on the ball, controlling the game and utilising Holland who seemed to constantly get the better of Corinthian’s defenders.
Despite this, the first chance of the half came for the Casuals after they were awarded a free kick just outside the box, following a Tristan Crama foul.
Checklett’s set piece forced a wonderful save from Rees who was forced to tip the number 10’s effort just over the bar, keeping the Bees in the lead.
Lisbie came close to getting his and Brentford’s second on 65 minutes when he met Max Wilcox’s cut back cross but was denied from tapping home after a great block from Charlie Edwards.
The Casuals weren't quite able to create any real goal scoring opportunities despite playing some good football at times, this was down to the Brentford back line proving to be a strong force.
The Bees were able to see out the rest of the match showing good signs of game management going through to the Second Round and looking on track in their hopes of retaining the London Senior Cup.
