Brentford goalkeeper Richard Lee has signed a new one-year extension to his contract.

Richard, 31, signed the deal at Griffin Park this afternoon.

It will keep him at Brentford until the end of the 2014/15 season.

He missed the end of the 2012/13 season and the start of 2013/14 with a shoulder injury but has been in the match day squad for all but three matches since mid-September.

Richard has played five games this season, with Brentford winning three of them, and has been a substitute for the remainder with David Button between the sticks.

Mark Warburton, Brentford FC Manager, said: “Richard Lee has been offered a contract extension in recognition of the excellent work and consistent level of performance he has displayed all season.

“Having gone through the required surgery and ensuing rehabilitation, Rich has worked tirelessly to ensure he is in a position to push hard for the number one jersey and there is no doubt that it is this pressure being applied that has resulted in the outstanding form of David Button over the last few weeks.

“David is acutely aware that Rich is hungry for the starting place and whilst they are great friends off the pitch, it is this level of competition that is driving them both forward.

“Rich fully deserves the contract extension and I have absolutely no doubts that when called upon, he will once again show his outstanding professionalism.”

Richard joined The Bees from Watford in the summer of 2010 having come through the youth ranks at the Hertfordshire club.

He played in the Premier League for The Hornets, also having a spell at Blackburn Rovers, and made 110 appearances in all competitions before moving to Griffin Park.

Although he started the 2010/11 season on the substitute’s bench his performances in Brentford’s runs in the Carling Cup and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy saw him established as first choice by the mid-way point of the campaign.

Richard’s penalty shoot-out expertise helped The Bees win four spot kick contests in his first season at the Club and although he missed the end of the season – and Brentford’s appearance in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley – he was named Supporters’ ‘Player of the Year’.

He was first choice for most of the 2011/12 season, playing 42 games, and played six last term before the injury ended his campaign early.

He has now played 66 Football League games for Brentford, 86 in all competitions.
