On October 16th 1889 around 20 members of the Brentford Rowing Club sat down at the Oxford and Cambridge Public House near Kew Bridge to decide whether to play Football or Rugby as their winter sport.
At a meeting six days earlier the decision to form a winter sports club for the Rowing members had been taken and Football was chosen by six votes to five.
That vote was annulled due to the lack of a useable ground for the new club but there were no such issues with the vote held at the second meeting.
Although, 125 years later, the result of the vote to decide between football and rugby might not come as as surprise you can still re-live just how close Brentford came to being a rugby club.
Using newspaper articles and cuttings from the time Brentford's Twitter (
) account told the story of that historic night which saw the birth of Brentford FC.
Now we have combined those tweets into a Storify timeline which tells the story of the meeting and the decision to play football over rugby.
You can read our Storify timeline of the night's events
.
If you missed it there is also a timeline of the very first meeting held on October 10th at which the decision to form a winter sports club was taken.
