Brentford B Assistant Coach Sam Saunders felt his side could well have come away with a win from their match with West London neighbours Queens Park Rangers after creating numerous chances at Jersey Road on Friday afternoon.

The young Bees came up against the Under-21 side from Rangers and drew 2-2 in a game they dominated for large parts, but twice let their opponents back in as the Bees were unable to hold on for the win in the second half.

Tony Yogane got his first goal for the Club as he added to an earlier strike from one of the Trialists in the match.

“It was a difficult game with the wind. I felt that we actually played better against the wind and uphill, which isn’t always the case,” explained Sam. “I think we mixed the game up well, played when we could and got the ball in behind for the willing runners, whether that be the wide guys, the number eights or the strikers who caused different threats.

Celebrations v QPR

“They (QPR) scored before half-time which was disappointing because I thought the performance meant we deserved to go in at the break in the lead. I was still confident that we could get a result going into the second half, but I was deemed to be wrong because I thought we didn’t play as well in the second half. We gave away another disappointing goal.

“We played really well against the wind where we created four of five real clearcut chances which could have put the game to bed. They scored following a set piece just before half-time which meant we came in a bit doom and gloom, and they went in feeling really happy."

Sam was keen to praise the performance of Yogane after he grabbed his first goal and was a constant threat with his power and pace out wide. Sam continued: “It was good to see Tony beat his man and get a goal. There were some good performances but also some which were below par from what some of the boys have set. Recent games the boys have been fantastic. They know, they’re an honest bunch and we could have done better in the second half, but it was a good game.

“Tony is very young, he and Isaac (Holland) are getting lots of minutes for the B Team. They’ve just turned 17 and the exposure that they’re getting with the lads is great. Tony is getting fitter and fitter and he’s growing in confidence. You can see he truly believes he should be here which is good because you want wingers to have confidence and the ability to go and beat their men. He’ll probably say it was a shot, but it was definitely a floated cross to the back post that went in! But it’s what he deserved for the minutes that he played, he did really well.”

The side are unbeaten since late August having picked up some impressive wins in recent weeks in multiple scenarios such as the Premier League Cup and London Senior Cup. Sam believes the side are moving in the right direction and the young players are progressing well.

He continued: “The group has changed completely; the squad has had a big turnaround with the age of the group having come down. The performances are what we’re looking for, of course results are important, but performances and the development of the players is key. Seeing the youngsters like Tony and Isaac improving is really good to see.”
