Brentford’s first pre-season match of 2015/16 saw them beat Portuguese second tier side Sporting Clube Farense 3-0.

Brentford used 21 players in the match with only Akaki Gogia remaining after the half time break, and even he was replaced by the returning Konstantin Kerschbaumer later on.

They played 4-3-3 throughout with two deeper lying midfield players but their wide attackers pushed high up the pitch.

The full backs were also encouraged to push forward and Moses Odubajo was Brentford’s best outlet in the first half.

He set up a goal for Jermaine Udumaga as The Bees went in at the break with a 1-0 lead.

Andre Gray scored a second after the break before Jonathan Douglas added a third at the death.

Odubajo created most of Brentford’s chances in the first half.

The England Under-20 right back bombed on throughout his 45 minute stint and set up an early opening, with the help of Jota, for Nico Yennaris, but the shot was blocked.

Odubajo then fired in a cross that Tiago Duque turned just past his own post and from the resulting corner a Yennaris effort was blocked.

A weak Udumaga effort was saved before Kerschbaumer forced Ricardo Neves to go full stretch to tip over a curling effort.

The Bees had started well but Farense came back in to the game.

Yoann Barbet was forced in to a fine tackle to stop Edinho scoring and Carlos Rodrigues was crowded out when he attempted to force a corner home soon after.

Thomas Agyiri shot wide from distance for the Portuguese side and Edinho missed the target from long range before Barbet made a tackle to prevent Filipe Barros moving clear.

The game went in to a lull after an exciting opening.

Brentford were moving the ball well but Farense were preventing them getting any attacking momentum.

However, The Bees were solid defensively and seemed to have a measure of control.

And when they got Odubajo in to attacking areas late in the first half, they were able to profit.

He almost set up a goal when Hugo Ventosa made a fine clearance inside his six-yard box and Odubajo did create the opener soon after.

Jota picked the pass and Odubajo raced clear before crossing for Udumaga to divert the ball home from ten yards.

Brentford’s second half line-up had more control than their first.

Gray offered a threat running in behind and Douglas combined with Alan Judge and Marcos Tébar to knit the play in midfield.

Márcio Sousa shot over early on for Farense but Brentford should have added to their tally in the opening exchanges of the second period.

When Gray got on to a Tébar pass he was able to round goalkeeper Sāo Bento but Ventosa made a remarkable recovery challenge to divert the shot over the bar.

When Gray chased down Sāo Bento soon after his clearance fell to Judge but the Irishman couldn’t put the ball in to the empty net from 40 yards.

Gogia dragged a shot wide after good work from Josh Laurent while Iuri Gomes hit the bar with a curling shot soon after at the other end.

There were signs that the game could turn ugly particularly when a challenge from Alan Khabalov saw him pick up a yellow card and Agyiri followed him later on for a high challenge on Tébar.

Alan McCormack and Ramiz Pasiov were involved in a confrontation late on as tempers threatened to boil over.

Brentford’s second goal came with 13 minutes remaining, they moved the ball in to the box and Gray got away from his man before lashing a shot across Sāo Bento and in to the net.

Agyiri had a shot saved by Mark Smith soon after and the young Brentford goalkeeper then went full stretch to deny Marcelo Correia.

A Pasiov shot was blocked and Sousa curled over before Tébar raced on to a Gray pass and fired inches wide.

But Brentford had the final word with the last kick of the match.

Kerschbaumer darted forward from midfield and found Gray, he turned and let fly with a shot that Sāo Bento saved but Douglas was on hand to bundle it in and seal the win.
