Sergi Canós will once again be wearing the red and white of Brentford. The exciting teenage attacker has completed a permanent move to Griffin Park and has signed a long-term contract. The 19-year-old put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract and finalised a Transfer Deadline Day move from Norwich City. There is also a club option for Brentford to extend Sergi’s stay until the summer of 2022. The clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for the Spanish Under-19 international and he completed a medical this morning, Tuesday 31 January.
Sergi will be returning to Griffin Park after a successful loan spell last season. He spent the 2015/16 campaign on a season-long loan from Liverpool and was involved in 39 games, 38 of them in the Championship. Sergi started 19 times and scored seven goals. He picked up the Club’s Community Player of the Year award for his work off the field during his loan spell and also won the Goal of the Season prize for a memorable strike at Reading.
Sergi moved to Norwich in the summer for an undisclosed fee after making his debut for Liverpool at the end of last season when he returned to Merseyside after his loan. He has only played six games for Norwich this term, three of them in the Championship. He started two games for The Canaries and scored two goals, both in the EFL Cup.
Dean Smith, Brentford FC Head Coach, said: "Sergi is a player and character that fits naturally into our dressing room. After working with him last season, you can see what he brings to the group, and an infectious attitude to match. We are all very happy that the deal has been completed and we can all now work together to continue his development and enjoy the potential we all know he possesses.”
Phil Giles, Brentford FC Co-Director of Football, said: "I'm delighted that we've finally managed to bring Sergi to the Club permanently. It is a transfer that, for various reasons, we weren't able to complete last summer after his loan spell here. Everybody knows what Sergi will bring to both the team and the Club more widely and I'm sure we'll all look forward to watching him play over the coming seasons."
Sergi came through Barcelona’s famous youth academy. He signed professional forms at Liverpool in the summer of 2014 last summer when still 17. He made his debut for Liverpool’s Under-21 side when still eligible for the Youth Team and played for Spain at Under-17 level, making six competitive appearances and scoring two goals. He made his debut for Spain’s Under-19 team last season, playing four games, and has also represented his country at Under-16 level.
Sergi will be eligible to play in Sunday's fixture at home to high-flying Brighton and Hove Albion. Secure your tickets for that match here.
