Brentford attacker Sergi Canós has signed a new long-term contract. The 22-year-old has been in discussions with the Club since the summer and agreed the four-year deal at the start of the week. He signed the new contract – which will run to the summer of 2023 with a Club option of a further year – yesterday afternoon to commit his future to The Bees.

Sergi joined The Bees, initially on loan, in August 2015 and quickly established himself as a terrace favourite. Then 18, Sergi scored the 2015/16 Brentford FC Goal of the Season away at Reading and ended the campaign with seven goals from 39 appearances. On returning to Anfield, he made what proved to be his only appearance for Liverpool as a late substitute on the final day of the Premier League season against West Bromwich Albion.

The former Barcelona youngster joined Norwich City in the summer of 2016 but struggled to break through at Carrow Road. He made just nine appearances before returning to TW8, this time permanently, in January 2017. Sergi scored his first goals back with a brace in a 5-3 win over Burton Albion, going on to end the season with four goals in 19 appearances.

After a further 31 appearances and three goals during the 2017/18 campaign, last season marked a new high for Sergi in terms of games and output. He registered a half-century of appearances, scoring nine goals and adding seven assists, as both a winger and wing-back. Sergi’s 11 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship this season have left him just one shy of the 150 mark in red and white.

Phil Giles, Brentford FC Co-Director of Football, said: “We have been discussing Sergi's contract with him since the summer. There was interest from other clubs during the transfer window, but we were keen to keep Sergi with us as we see how much he can continue to offer the team and develop as a player. I'm glad we have finally reached an agreement to extend the contract.”

Brentford FC Head Coach Thomas Frank added: “I am very pleased that we have extended Sergi’s contract. Along with Ollie Watkins and Rico Henry, we have now signed three of our young, talented players – among the most promising in the division – to long-term contracts and each of them has the potential to improve further. Sergi has had a very good start to the season. He has developed as a player and has been more consistent and delivered in games over the full 90 minutes. He has been working hard to get better and we have seen that on the pitch.”
