A Late Chloe Logie equaliser ensured our Women’s First Team left Rectory Park with a share of the points on Sunday afternoon following a well-fought game.
After their 4-2 victory in the League Cup last weekend, the Bees were eager to make it three wins out of three as they took on a strong Sport London E Benfica side.
Head coach Karleigh Osborne would have been happy with how his team started as they looked to attack right from the off. Jodie Reid looked especially dangerous in the first five minutes, controlling the play for the Bees in midfield.
It was a very even opening half an hour with it becoming apparent as to why there was just one position between the teams in the league table before kick-off.
The first chance of the half fell to Sport London E Benfica, with Emily Boycott making a great save for Brentford keeping the scoreline level.
Kimberley Castro found herself one on one with the 'keeper and her shot looking destined to find the bottom corner but a fingertip save from Boycott denied the hosts.
Castro made up for her missed opportunity though as she opened the scoring on 40 minutes.
Kendal Drake played a lobbed pass to her team-mate who ran on to the ball and headed it towards goal with Boycott again making a save but Castro was able to head in the rebound from just four yards out, giving the hosts the lead at the break.
The Bees came out of the second half determined to get an equaliser right from the off. Chloe Logie’s volley from ten yards was denied brilliantly by the home team 'keeper, Carla Jaramillo, after the Brentford number nine was played through by Sophie Troth.
Logie looked dangerous for the away side and was causing the back line of Sport London E Benfica all sorts of problems.
On 60 minutes she got on the end of a lovely through ball from Demi Edwards, but Logie’s shot at goal didn’t have enough power to beat Jaramillo.
After pressing for most of the half Brentford eventually got their goal and it was Logie with her 11th of the season.
An excellent cross Troth from the right side of the pitch found Nikki Saunders at the far post, the number 12 headed the ball towards goal with Jaramillo saving the ball into the path of Logie, who tapped home from five yards out on 85 minutes.
Madeline Heavingham Ford was making her First Team debut for Brentford after some outstanding performances for our Women’s B Team.
She made a positive introduction to the game with just five minutes remaining, bringing the visitors the energy and commitment they needed to push on after their leveller.
Logie thought she had snatched a winner with just one minute remaining after she showed great skill to flick the ball over Jessica Wadey and using her strength to protect the ball and volley it into the roof of the net.
However, the referee gave a free kick to the home side as Logie was deemed to have fouled Wadey before putting the ball into the back of the net, much to the striker’s and her team’s frustration.
Sport London E Benfica managed to see the game out after being put under serious pressure from the Bees in added time.
