After last weekend’s postponement, The Bees returned to action with mixed results on the road. First up on Tuesday, a Kyle McFadzean own-goal and Ollie Watkins’ 11th of the season wrapped up a comfortable win over Burton Albion at The Pirelli Stadium. However, Dean Smith’s side couldn’t follow that as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Millwall on Saturday. George Saville scored inside a minute as Brentford had a goal disallowed, hit the woodwork twice, and had a shot cleared off the line in the defeat.

Brentford B got their five-day trip to Scotland underway with a 4-0 win over local side Kelty Hearts on Sunday; Marcus Forss scored twice with Jarvis Edobor and Herson Rodrigues Alves getting the other goals. It was a good run-out for Kevin O’Connor’s side ahead of Wednesday’s fixture against Rangers.

The race for promotion to the Premier League has become that little bit more intriguing after Wolverhampton Wanderers saw their lead over Cardiff City cut to just three points after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa. Wolves have won just one of their last five and now have a seven-point advantage over Villa in third, with Fulham a further point back.

Derby County’s struggles continued with a 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Gary Rowett’s side haven’t won in seven and are now just a point clear of sixth-placed Middlesbrough with Bristol City, Preston North End, Sheffield United, Millwall, Brentford, and Ipswich Town all within striking distance.

At the other end of the table it is looking increasingly bleak for Sunderland and Birmingham City after they suffered defeats on Saturday. The Black Cats are now four points from safety, having played a game more than most sides around them, while Blues have lost both games under new boss Garry Monk and have taken just three points from the last 24 available.

Events at the London Stadium dominated the front and back pages over the weekend as mass protests directed towards the West Ham United ownership turned ugly. Play was held up on a number of occasions as supporters invaded the pitch with young Hammers fans ending up on the Burnley substitutes bench for their own safety. Mark Noble was involved in an altercation with one pitch invader and co-Chairman David Sullivan was reported struck by a coin.

There were further unsavoury scenes following Manchester United’s victory over Liverpool with Sky Sports pundit, and former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher filmed spitting in the direction of a 14-year-old supporter after being goaded by the girl’s father.

There were emotional scenes in Italy as Fiorentina played their first game since the death, aged 31, of captain Davide Astori. Play was suspended in the 13th minute as fans from both sides paid tribute to Astori with Fiorentina’s Vitor Hugo saluting Astori’s shirt after scoring the only goal against Benevento.
