Brentford have exercised an option to extend the contract of defender Dominic Thompson at the same time he joins Ipswich Town on loan for the rest of the season. The 21-year-old left-sided player completed his move to the Sky Bet League One side today, Thursday 27 January. He will stay with them until the end of the 2020/21 season and could make his debut against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, 29 January.

Dom, as he is known to most, joined Brentford from Arsenal in the summer of 2019, ending a seven-year association with Arsenal. He signed a three year contract with an option for The Bees to extend that until the summer of 2023. That option has now been taken up and Dom will spend the rest of the season with Ipswich before returning to West London ahead of next season. He has played five times for Brentford this season, including making his Premier League debut.

Phil Giles, Brentford FC Director of Football, said: “Dom has done well for us in the minutes he has played so far this season, especially in our home game against Manchester City. Unfortunately, he hasn’t played as much as I’m sure he would have wanted, so a loan to a good club such as Ipswich is an ideal solution. We look forward to welcoming him back in the summer, having extended his contract by a further year.”

Dom came through the ranks at the North London side and turned professional but left before making a competitive appearance for them. He was, however, part of the team which reached the FA Youth Cup Final in 2018 and joined Brentford a year later. This is a second loan spell for Dom. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Swindon Town and played 25 League One matches. He has 18 appearances in total for The Bees, 13 of them from the start.
