Zain Westbrooke believes he can learn a lot from manager Lee Carsley as the midfielder starts life as a Development Squad player at Brentford.

The 18-year-old signed a one year Development Squad deal last week having completed his two year scholarship in the summer.

The creative midfielder is looking forward to joining up with former Republic of Ireland International midfielder Lee and feels he can learn a lot off someone with so much top class experience.

“I worked with Lee Carsley last season and the way that he goes about training sessions and his man management is good,” said Zain, speaking to Bees Player after signing his contract. “He gives you confidence and tells you what to do so that will be good.”

“When you have a coach with Lee’s pedigree who has played in the Premier League it can really help. You don’t have to deal with it yourself you can go to someone and ask for an opinion. Lee has obviously played with the midfielders that I want to be so he can see what would be best to do in a training or match situation.”

Zain was a key part of the Youth Team last season as they finished second in the Under-18 Professional Development League Two South and then reached the final of the league Play-Offs where they lost to Charlton Athletic.

The midfielder said that while it was disappointing to end the season without a trophy last year’s campaign will give everybody confidence going into this season.

“It was a successful season overall,” said Zain. “As a team we missed out on some things that we should have won. From a personal point of view it was a really good season, it was really progressive, and that’s why I got offered the contract. I have to keep progressing now. We all know that we had a really good season team wise and individually.”

Having only signed for one year Zain admits that he must start the season off quickly if he wants to extend his stay at Griffin Park beyond 2016. The midfielder believes that it is up to him to make the most of the chance as the responsibility for his development falls to him.

“I am delighted to sign it,” said Zain. “It is what you are working for all throughout your scholarship and to hear that you have been offered one is great news. A one year deal means that you have to get started really quickly and work towards the next contract. You can’t sit and be comfortable as you were with your scholarship.

“You had two years to settle in and now you have to start fast and get going. There is a lot more onus on yourself as a Development Squad player. You have to take more responsibility as you don’t have as many people to bounce off and use.”
