Zain Westbrooke has left Brentford and joined Sky Bet League Two Coventry City after an undisclosed agreement was reached for his transfer. The Brentford B midfield player spent time on trial with the League Two outfit earlier in 2018 and earned himself a contract. The clubs reached an agreement for Zain to make the switch and the deal was confirmed today, Thursday 10 May.
Zain’s departure ends a long association with Brentford. The 21-year-old joined The Bees in his late teens after leaving Chelsea and progressed through to the professional ranks after completing a scholarship. He signed his first professional contract in 2015 and earned two more deals, extending his stay until the end of the 2017/18 season. He captained Brentford B for much of the past two seasons.
The highlight of Zain’s Brentford career came towards the end of the 2016/17 season when he made his Sky Bet Championship debut as a substitute against Fulham. He was also named as a substitute against Ipswich Town early the following season. Zain had loan spells at Solihull Moors and Leyton Orient this season, playing twice for the former and eight times for the latter. He was named B Team Players’ Player of the Year last season after playing 38 games and scoring six goals. He made 21 appearances this season and scored six times.
Kevin O’Connor, Brentford B Head Coach, said: “Zain has been an integral part of the B Team and youth set up for many years and the staff are delighted he has secured a deal at Coventry. Due to the quality of players in the first team in Zain’s position, his opportunities were limited but I’m very confident he can have a long and successful career. We will be watching his progress with pride and wish him every success in the future.”
