Christian Norgaard said he was ‘speechless’ after Brentford were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Gillingham on Tuesday. 

The Bees drew 1-1 in normal time but lost 6-5 to the League Two side on penalties at the Gtech Community Stadium, and Norgaard was ‘sad’ and ‘disappointed’ at not making it through to the next round.

The midfielder said: "It was not good enough. We went into this game wanting to win, we put out a really strong side and had a strong bench as well, so it’s very disappointing not being able to qualify for the next round."

He added: "[Gillingham] were very low but we did get an early goal and I think we had two or three other good chances in the first half.

“I don't know, I’m a bit speechless, actually. I'm really sad that we're not through to the next round.

"I’m sad about the performance that the crowd had to witness today, they showed up in big numbers, expecting a good game from our side and they just didn't get it.  

“I know cup football can be tough sometimes and it's not the first surprise in history, but it's definitely not good enough and we have to analyse it and make it better.” 

Norgaard played 45 minutes in the League Cup clash - his first minutes for Thomas Frank’s side since late August - and he stated that he was happy to get back on the pitch ahead of our game against Manchester City on Saturday.

“It's always nice to be on the grass, you’d much rather be there than in the gym, so, yeah, it was nice and hopefully I can build on that and get some more minutes at the weekend,” said Norgaard.

The 28-year-old added: “We've had some ups and down results over the last couple of weeks and I know we have a tough opponent ahead of us, but I think we're going there with the belief of us being able to get something out of it, so it will be important for both me personally and the team to finish off in a good way.”
