Bryan Mbeumo stressed the need for Brentford’s players to step up following the news that top goalscorer Ivan Toney will be unavailable until January.
The Cameroon international scored two and set up Yoane Wissa for the other as the Bees won 3-1 against Tottenham Hotspur on the penultimate day of the Premier League season.
“We miss a big personality and a big player,” Mbeumo responded when asked about Toney’s absence.
“Everybody – not just me Kev [Schade] and Wissa – have to step up and take responsibility.
“I couldn’t expect better today. It was a big result. After a bit of a sloppy first half, everybody raised their level. It’s a fantastic win.”
Mbeumo then reflected on his eighth and ninth goals of the season.
“Wissa gave me a very good ball to put me in a one-on-one position,” he continued.
“I’ve trained a lot in the last weeks for this kind of situation and today it went in the back of the net.
“In a game it’s much harder because your opponent is tighter and everything goes quicker. That’s why we train it.”
The 23-year-old admitted that a hat-trick was on his mind when he received the ball from Shandon Baptiste in the build-up to Brentford’s third goal, but that he always intended to find team-mate Wissa in the 18-yard box.
“He was in a better position than me, and he was free, so that’s why I passed,” he smiled. “I work for the team and I want to win.”
