Despite being disappointed with his side's first-half performance, Brentford head coach Thomas Frank believes some tweaks at half-time and an improved second-half display made the Bees' 2-0 win over Chelsea a 'fully fair' result.
The hosts had 69 per cent possession and 10 attempts in the opening 45 minutes, as well as hitting the crossbar, but the sides went into the break at 0-0.
And a change in mentality and some slight tactical tweaks changed the game for Brentford, who scored two second-half goals and secured the win, Frank explained.
The Bees boss said: “The win was, of course, very good. But, in the first half, I wasn’t pleased with the performance - I think we were average at best.
“Chelsea were good in that first 45 minutes and we weren’t defending as well as we normally do, we were hanging in there. We didn’t give too much away but, normally, the standards we have are higher.
“On the ball, we were not cool enough, I think we could have had a few more passes together.
“So, at half-time, I asked the players to believe, that was the first thing, and to trust themselves - we had so much more to add.
“A big thing was the coolness on the ball, a big thing was getting a few more passes together when we could, and we also adjusted a few bits defensively.
“Then, throughout that second half, the performance means the result is fully fair.”
Brentford have now scored the first goal in seven of their 10 Premier League matches this season and, despite not going on to secure maximum points from all of those games, Frank is happy with the way they have opened the scoring and defended well in recent weeks.
Asked about the statistic, he stated: “It’s very positive. Now we are also getting closer to doing what we normally do well when we score first, which is normally win or get a draw.
“I think it's only twice in three seasons that we have been beaten when taking the lead, we normally get more wins, so I'm glad that we finally turned the corner and did that."
Frank added: “That’s something we're really good at, in general. The margins in football maybe haven’t dropped our way, but there are also bits to learn from every game, there are bits we need to adapt, as well as keep doing what we do well.”
