Mathias Jensen underlined the importance of Brentford’s high press after Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Manchester United.
The midfielder played an instrumental role in our first victory of the Premier League season, registering a goal and an assist during a sensational opening 45 minutes at the Gtech Community Stadium.
“It was a crazy game,” said Mathias.
“We came out flying and scored with almost every chance we had.
“The high pressure and the low pressure – standing in a low block – we made it very difficult for them to brake us down and we didn’t concede many chances.
“We always want to press high. Even if we don’t score, we create big chances by covering the ball high up the pitch. We didn’t expect to score that many goals from high pressure, but it happens sometimes!”
The Denmark international netted our second goal of the afternoon, stealing the ball from Christian Eriksen and stoking home into the bottom corner.
“Of course, it was a mistake from Christian but the ‘keeper put him in a difficult position,” said Mathias.
“I just tried to get close and put my foot out. Luckily it was in front of me suddenly. I didn’t really know if I could pass to anyone, so I just tried to chop it. Often the ‘keeper will cover the long corner, which meant I could put it in the short one.”
We bolstered the midfield department earlier this week with the arrival of Mikkel Damsgaard. Mathias stressed that competition for places will get the best out of each player in the squad.
“Everyone is doing well, and we have different types, which is important,” he said.
“Vita [Vitaly Janelt] started on the bench today after a great game last week. It depends on who we’re playing, what type Thomas wants. It’s about performing when you get the chance.
“I’ve known Mikkel since he was a very young lad; I played with him when he was 17. He’s a really good guy, really down to earth. I hope people are excited to see him when he gets the chance, because he’s an amazing footballer.”
