A keen footballer in his youth, Jonathan Moss played academy football with his hometown club, Sunderland, and Millwall before earning a scholarship to the Central Connecticut State University in America.

He decided to stay in the UK instead of heading across the Atlantic and, as part of his A-Levels, earned his refereeing qualifications in the late 1980s. However, the West Riding FA Official didn't take up refereeing fully until he stopped playing more than a decade later. Once he took up the whistle it was a quick rise, with Moss on the National List of Assistant Referees just three years later.

After taking charge of the 2005 Conference Play-Off final he was promoted to the National List of referees for the following season. Moss has been a top flight referee since 2011 and officiated the 2015 FA Cup final between Arsenal and Aston Villa as well as the 2019 EFL Cup Final and Community Shield.

Moss's first Brentford assignment came in 2005 as we won 1-0 at Rochdale in the FA Cup First Round. During his first Bees league assignment he sent Clark Masters off during a 2-2 draw at home to Gillingham.

Most notably, perhaps, he was the man in charge of our 2-2 FA Cup Fourth Round draw against Chelsea in January 2013, awarding a second-half penalty to The Bees for a foul on Tom Adeyemi.

In May 2015 he officiated the First Leg of our Play-Off semi-final against Middlesbrough. The five years following that 1-0 defeat brought just a 2-0 win over Birmingham City and a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa before he returned to Brentford action last October in the Carabao Cup, taking charge of the 3-0 derby victory over Fulham that sent us into our first ever major cup Quarter-Final.

This season, he's taken charge of one Brentford game, October's 3-1 defeat away at Burnley.

In total, we have won six and drawn three of Moss' 12 games in charge.

So far this campaign, the 51-year-old has shown 25 yellow cards and two reds in 11 matches. Of the 20 referees to officiate in the top flight this season, Moss averages the third fewest fouls per game (17.88) and the second fewest yellow cards per game (2).
