Brentford striker Halil Dervişoğlu has been named in a training squad by Turkey ahead of the upcoming UEFA European Championships. The 21-year-old has spent the past few months on loan at Galatasaray Spor Kulübü and helped them to second place in the Turkish top flight. The Turkey under-21 international will now link up with his national team.
Turkey have named a 30-player squad for a training camp that starts in the coming days. They have friendly international matches against Azerbaijan and Moldova before the start of the European Championships. All nations will name 26-player squads for the event at the start of June.
Halil has been a regular for Turkey’s Under-21s and scored five goals in three appearances for them this season. He has eight goals in 13 games for his county overall. He has yet to be capped at full international level but may be able to earn a place in the tournament. Turkey have been placed in a group with Italy, Wales and Switzerland for the event, which starts on 11 June.
Halil had a fine end to the season, scoring on each of his final three starts for Galatasaray. They ended the season second in the table, missing out on the title on goals scored. In total he played 12 games after the January loan switch, grabbing those three goals in the final weeks of the loan.
That was the second loan this season for Halil. He spent the first half of the season with FC Twente, in the Netherlands. Halil made ten appearances for them in all competitions before returning to West London in January. He scored one and made one as Brentford beat Middlesbrough in an Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie before completing the season in Turkey.
Halil joined The Bees from Sparta Rotterdam in early 2020. He made seven appearances for The Bees last season, starting in two Emirates FA Cup ties against Stoke City and Leicester City but was largely a substitute behind a Brentford front three that scored 57 Sky Bet Championship goals. He played in the Carabao Cup win at Southampton in August before his move to Twente and then scored on his only appearance after his return from the Netherlands before moving to Turkey.
