Brentford FC can confirm the departure of four First Team players at the end of the 2021/22 season. The Club will not be taking up options to extend the contracts of central defenders Julian Jeanvier and Zanka. Goalkeepers Álvaro Fernández and Jonas Lössl will be leaving the Club at the end of their loan deals next month. Denmark international midfield player Christian Eriksen is also out of contract.
There will be three new members of the First Team squad next season. Goalkeeper Matthew Cox, defender Fin Stevens and midfield player Paris Maghoma will all be promoted from the Brentford B squad. All will be part of the First Team training group when The Bees return at the end of next month.
Jonas and Álvaro will return to their parent clubs at the end of loan spells. Jonas was on loan at Brentford from FC Midtjylland, the Danish Superliga side where Brentford FC Owner Matthew Benham has the majority shareholding. He played three games for The Bees after arriving at the start of January, two of them in the Premier League.
Álvaro has been on loan from Sociedad Deportiva Huesca. He has spent the entire season with The Bees and played 16 games. Álvaro played 12 of his matches in the middle of the Premier League season, stepping in when David Raya picked up a significant knee injury. The Bees earned 11 points in those matches and Álvaro also helped Brentford to three Carabao Cup victories in his time in West London.
Julian leaves West London after four years with The Bees, albeit having not played for Brentford in more than two years, largely due to a serious knee injury. The powerful central defender played 58 games in all competitions for Brentford in his first two seasons and was part of the squad that finished third in the Sky Bet Championship in 2019/20, reaching the Play-Off Final. He spent the following season on loan at Turkish Süper Lig club KasımpaÅŸa but picked up a serious knee injury early in his time there, which limited his involvement. Julian also made his international debut for Guinea while with The Bees and has earned six caps.
Zanka joined Brentford in September, signing a contract until the end of the season. He played ten games for The Bees, eight in the Premier League, and scored against Leicester City. Zanka is current recovering from injury and Brentford FC will continue to monitor his recovery from injury, helping him regain fitness and enabling the Danish international defender to find a new club.
Phil Giles, Brentford FC Director of Football, said: “On behalf of everyone at Brentford I’d like to thank the players who will be leaving us this summer. Julian has done a good job but been very unlucky with a significant injury. Jonas has been a top professional at the training ground and helped us enormously while David recovered to full fitness. Álvaro has benefitted hugely from playing in the Premier League but now needs to establish himself as the first choice goalkeeper back at Huesca or elsewhere.
“Zanka has also been very unlucky with injuries, we intend to continue to help his return to full fitness and then re-assess the situation from there. Finally, it is no secret that we would love Christian to remain at Brentford for more seasons, and we will continue to discuss that possibility with him and his representatives.
“It is always great to see players progress from B Team to First Team squads. Matthew will stay with us next season, and we’ll consider whether or not the best next step for Fin and Paris is to go on loan as the summer progresses.”
Brentford will also welcome back eight players that are currently out on loan. Ellery Balcombe Mads Bidstrup, Halil DerviÅŸoÄŸlu, Marcus Forss, Charlie Goode, Luka Racic, Dominic Thompson and Joel Valencia have been away from West London for some or all of the 2021/22 campaign. Luka still has one game left to play while the others have come to the end of their seasons and are currently expected to be back with The Bees for pre-season training.
Matthew, Fin and Paris will be officially promoted to the First Team group at the start of next season. Goalkeeper Matthew joined Brentford from AFC Wimbledon last summer and was named as a substitute in 12 matches this term. Wales Under-21 international defender Fin has already made a Premier League debut and nine appearances for the First Team in his two years with Brentford B. Four of those appearances have come this season. England Youth international Paris joined The Bees in January 2020 from Tottenham Hotspur. He has been named in the matchday squad for four Premier League games this season. More on the B Team squad will follow soon.
